Postpartum Physical Therapy

You and your body deserve support after giving birth. And it’s so much more than “bouncing back”.

Postpartum recovery is about giving your body the time and care it needs to heal from the physical demands of pregnancy and birth, followed by rebuilding and strengthening with the right support.

We know that the postpartum period can come with a variety of challenges, from leaking and core weakness to scar recovery and pelvic pain.

Our specialized care is designed to address these concerns and guide you toward feeling strong, confident, and supported.

We can help with the following:

  • 0-6 week postpartum recovery plan

  • Urinary or fecal incontinence

  • Diastasis recti (separation of abdominal tissue), coning/doming with movement

  • Core strengthening & coordination

  • Cesarean scar recovery & perineal scar recovery (episiotomy or tears)

  • Prolapse and heaviness or pressure in the pelvic floor region

  • Hemorrhoids/anal fissures

  • Pelvic girdle pain, tailbone pain, joint pain, neck/upper/lower back pain

  • Functional mobility & strength and return to high-impact activities (running/sports/weight training)

You don’t have to just hope that your body heals after giving birth or having a cesarean section. We’d love to help you.

We know that it can sort of feel like a “free-for-all” after you give birth. You try things, it doesn’t feel good, you stop, you get frustrated because you want to get back to living your life, and then the cycle continues for however long. We want you to know that it doesn’t have to be this way. Pelvic floor therapy can help you effectively heal after birth.

Are you looking for more information than you received at a 6-week clearance appointment?

When you head into your 6-week clearance appointment, you’ll typically be given the “go-ahead” for exercise as tolerated and, essentially, you’re “free” to do whatever you’d like.

But we see it all of the time: Once you leave that appointment, you won’t know where to start, what’s safe, how to stop having symptoms like pain, pressure, and leaking while you exercise, go from sitting to standing, or lift your baby. Or, if you’re like many of the moms we work with, you know you’ll need to avoid the trampoline park for the rest of eternity.

Just know that you don’t need to accept that. During pelvic PT sessions, we’ll determine your baseline and develop a specific plan to help you return to life without these frustrating symptoms. This is not something you need to just “accept” now that you’re a part of the mom club.

Frequently Asked Questions about Postpartum Physical Therapy and Recovery

  • You don't have to wait until your 6-week clearance to reach out. While we'll always work within what's appropriate for your stage of recovery, there are things we can address in the early weeks, and getting started sooner often means a smoother overall recovery. If you're further out from delivery and haven't had PT yet, it's not too late. We see patients months and even years postpartum.

When the pelvic floor isn't functioning well, it can show up as pain, leaking, urgency, pressure, discomfort with sex, and more. Pelvic floor PT uses hands-on treatment, movement, breathwork, and individualized exercise to address the root cause of those symptoms, not just manage them.

  • Absolutely. C-section recovery is often overlooked in postpartum care, but a surgical birth still affects your pelvic floor, core, and surrounding tissue in significant ways. Scar tissue, abdominal weakness, and pelvic floor dysfunction are all common after a C-section and all very treatable. You deserve the same level of care and support regardless of how you delivered.

  • Because a 6-week clearance means you've healed enough to resume normal activity, not that your body has fully recovered. Many people walk out of that appointment with lingering symptoms and no real guidance on what to do next. Postpartum PT picks up where that appointment leaves off, addressing the strength, function, and healing that a routine checkup can't assess.

  • Yes, for sure. Rather than guessing when you're ready to run, lift, or return to your workout routine, we assess what your body is actually prepared for and build a progressive plan to get you there safely. The goal is to make sure when you return to the activities you love, your body is ready to support you.

  • The gym addresses fitness. Postpartum PT addresses function. Before you can safely build strength and endurance, your pelvic floor, core, and connective tissue need to be working the way they're supposed to. Without that foundation, returning to high-impact exercise too soon can make symptoms like leaking, prolapse, or pain worse. We make sure the foundation is solid first so that everything you do after that actually sticks.

  • Honestly, yes. If you would like to schedule a session just to get another set of eyes on your body, the way you move, and to assess your pelvic floor muscle health, then we’d love to see you.

  • Of course! If you decide to see us in person, you can bring your baby along. We understand that it’s difficult, especially in the first few months, to leave your baby. We also offer convenient in-home sessions, so if you’d prefer to be seen in your home, we can do that instead. Just let us know your preference when you reach out.
